1st June 2014 – Georgia Wine Festival, and Builder Bill is back

On Sunday, we took advantage of the fine weather to go out to Three Sisters Winery for the first weekend of the Georgia Wine Country Festival . This runs every weekend through June, and on offer are wine tastings, typical Georgia barbeque fare and live music. This was the pre-opening dry run, so the visiting wineries offering tastings were not present, but there was live jazz with Moose and Squirrel. The hubbub and folk milling about did not disturb a nesting bluebird whose home was within ten feet of the musicians. We will be back in the weeks to come to see what else is on offer.

On the Build site

Builder Bill returned from his week by the sea in Florida to find that there has been a fair bit of progress in his absence. Tom and WC have been busy hanging interior doors and installing architrave round doors and windows, the garage doors have been installed and the much needed bricks have been delivered. However, we were not at all happy with the quality of sealing the cedar garage door surfaces, and told Bill as much. The eventual conclusion that the painter involved is no longer associated with our build, and a new crew have been commissioned – but they cannot start work for nearly a month. Bill also arranged delivery of more ipe wood so that the decks at the back of the house could be completed by Milan and his framing crew.

Back at the rental house, the mountain of bits and pieces for the house continues to grow. The front door can now only be opened with care, and you need to sidle in between the furniture and the boxes of lights, taps and whatever. The garage also holds a stock of boxed-up ceiling fans and a compressor for my wine room.

We had a constructive session with Bill on the finances, and things are still looking OK on that front. It’s a little more worrying on the schedule – it is now looking increasingly likely that move-in will be delayed to early September. There are a lot of jobs that “come at the very end” according to Bill – I envisage a magical moment when plumbers, electricians, painters, concrete pourers and carpenters are all competing for the “go last” spot. Whoever will decide whether the lights should be installed before the house is painted and the floors sanded and sealed.
